Kmac, thanks for posting this. If you make a few more posts I can PM you.

I last visited Jim in the Care Home in Glasgow in November 2012. He has descended into that Darkness from which only Death gives a release. He did not recognise me, or at least made no signs of knowing me.

I first met him in the 1960s when we were students in Edinburgh. Very bright, intelligent but a troubled soul. I visited him in Brno and in Prague when he was teaching there.

If others wish to visit him I can give contact details by PM. Memento mori.

I remember Jim. I wonder if I am alone in that. A reminder of how life is for those who die without issue.

As I get into my mid-40s, I begin to think about this more and more (of course never thought about this in my 20s and 30s). Where will I be and how will it all go down when the time comes?

I will send you a message from The Other Side. My messenger will come in non-human-form. Perhaps a crow or a raven.

When people reach their 40s, awareness of mortality salience can be strong. Even terrifying for some people. I'm much more careful about where I go and what I do now.

After a while we begin to realise that Death is a permanent change.
