I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with Coatepec as a place to visit/explore?

It's a beautiful place. The general situation in that region has been a bit turbulent in the past three years, so just be cautious and keep your wits about you.

Thank you for this information. I was not aware of how many states, including Veracruz, have travel advisories.

Any thoughts about which direction this situation is going?

It won't get any better until some time after the next president takes office--And it could quite possible get worse.
