I can't provide many specifics, but I have friends who have been there for 25 years and plan to stay as long as they are allowed. It is not perfect (was darn near back in the 80'-90's), but still without competition the best job in Oman... and with the way things are going north of them in TEFL, perhaps the best in the Gulf... as far as the students and the living/working conditions.

Teachers are provided with furnished housing relatively close to the campus, but you will still need a car.

Salaries are based on your credentials... while low for the Gulf, it will be about the highest in Oman.

Good Luck!

Thanks so much, VS! Yeah, I'm not expecting to earn as much as I did in the KSA, but from my visit to Muscat a few years ago, I imagine the quality of life will be higher -- no abaya, freedom to drive, no store closings during prayer time.

I've also applied to Dhofar University and am waiting to hear back.

SQU would definitely be a better choice than Dhofar... assuming that you have an option. Cool

Is Dhofar not a good option?

I'm no expert, but, the talk on the street when I was in Oman was that SQU is the best university gig in Oman. Best pay and best students. They are also the most selective when it comes to hiring. It's my understanding that it's been that way for ages. If you have the option of picking SQU or the University of Dhofar, then, all other things being equal and IMHO, pack your bags for Muscat.

It has been the best job in Oman since the mid-80s when it opened, and these days it is in the top 2 or 3 best jobs in the Gulf... IMHO... the other being AUS. AUS has higher pay.

Dhofar is not a bad choice, just not as good as SQU.

I interviewed with SQU but wasn't hired. They have put my application in "reserve" which I'm guessing means they may look at it again at a future time.

Thanks, VS. Dhofar emailed to say they received my application and then said they'd be in touch by May 15 but weren't so I'm guessing they went will someone else.

I suspect the TEFL market in Oman has become quite attractive but competitive given the foundation year program uncertainty in the UAE and Qatar's political conflicts.

Have you given Kazakhstan a look?

Hi everyone.

It's been awhile since I've been on this site. I was very fortunate to have a job with SQU from 2012-15; they were EXCELLENT to work for and I had a difficult time leaving them when I was offered renewal.

However, many of my former colleagues are still there and things have changed a lot for language teachers. It does not appear to be as pleasant an environment as it once was, but I think it is still the best EFL position in the country by leaps and bounds. They are flooded with qualified applicants from all over the place now, since apparently other Gulf universities have dissolved their bridge or foundation programs. Since they can afford to be extremely selective, I suspect it is a bit harder to get hired there unless you have wasta.

Anyone who is hired, feel free to pm me for contact info of some good people to know at SQU, both in and outside the Centre for Preparatory Studies (formerly Language Centre).
