|

We were discussing Chinese students over on the China Job-Related forum, and the thread took a turn and we ended up discussing the Philippines and Filipinos/Filipino students.
I am of the opinion that Filipinos, and by extension, Filipino students are a lovely bunch, and far from dumb.
A reply from another poster opinionated this: "High-level Chinese students blow high-level Filipinos out of the water (in non-English subjects, obviously). There's a reason China is a per-capita world power in just about everything and the Philippines is a per-capita world power in virtually nothing. The Philippines, if it was a Harry Potter house, would be Hufflepuff. Kind, loyal, friendly, yes. Smart, no. A bit MOD EDIT, is how I'd put it.
Agree/disagree with this sweeping generalization of Filipinos/Filipino students? |

It might also be opined that while Chinese students are good in mathematics and some other tech subjects it can also be said that there is no intuitive innovation either.
While they may appear bright on exams they haven't invented anything new since gunpowder. They are very good at copying anything but not so much in the innovation / invention stages.
The Philippines on the other hand suffers from a serious brain drain - the brightest and best continue go abroad since there is nothing but abject poverty at home for 90% of them. There is a reason why they export nurses, teachers and other professionals and it is not because they are particularly dim.
You can blame government policy, corruption and nepotism for poor economic performance but they are smart enough to have 30% of their adult work force abroad earning and remitting dollars to keep their families and country afloat. Unlike Americans they didn't borrow their way out of their problems and leave a 21 trillion dollar debt to their kids and grand-kids to pay off.

And this is the smart I like, not the rote-learning dullard smart I see too often.
Nurses, doctors, pilots, teachers (in China and Korea - YES), call centre staff, cruise liner workers, entertainment staff, people in 100s or 1000s of different roles and duties and occupations around the world - providing and adding value to those around them.
They are not just
workers, they are an integral part of our world mesh, and it is in part due to their education they received.
I see them for their awesomeness, due to their 1. natural intelligence, 2. their quality education, 3. their street smarts, 4. their love for their family and nation.
My two pennies.. |

Please may I add that the statistics gathering markers may vary between nations and might lead to underestimating the magnitude of of the Filipino's OFW's contribution to their country.
Up to the present administration, approx 10% of the population worked abroad remitting home more than 60% of the entire nations earnings from abroad.
Given a median age now up to around 24 (21 in year 2000) and with a population of almost 100 million may also show a trend towards delaying or reducing having a family in favour of economic prowess?
