Hi,

I am preparing for a JET interview. I want to know if anybody is aware of any good websites which will help prepare me for this interview, and the types of questions the interviewers will ask.
Thanks

Hi Aragorn,

I had my JET interview in '99 and they asked me things like:

What do you want to do after JET? (grad school)

What extracurricular activities would you do with your students in Japan?(plays)

What makes you interested in Japan? (You want to improve relations between the U.S. and Japan)

What would you do in an embarrassing situation? (Act politely and consult your co-teacher)

And so on. You can see that they just want to know if you are a nice, polite person who is enthusiastic about living and working in Japan. And having no knowledge of Japanese is fine. It worked for me.

cheers
M.

In the interview, there were three or four people present - consular staff, a former JET participant and some Mombusho (Ministry of Education) representative. The interview went quickly. They asked questions to find out about how I would react in a different culture, a little about current affairs in Japan to test my knowledge of the country, and about my personal interest in Japanese culture. The interview is a 45 minute sniff test to find out where your interests lie and what kind of person you are.

I heard the interview was much shorter and that it was not uncommon to be asked to perform a short teaching demonstration. I wouldn't mind doing that if the interview panel would role play with me as students, but if they just silently stared at me, that would be awful!

<heh>

But their sitting there silently while you flounder *is* more realistic. ;)

Also, it's a better test to see how you cope with it.
