Hello,

I"m currently in Australia, and have spent time teaching English in China. Now I have a possible offer of going to Nikolayev in southern Ukraine.

Does anyone have ANY info regarding the city....price of a flat to rent, public transport, people in general, nightlife, bars, live music venues, the "expat" population, etc....general stuff. I can't find much from web searches other than the usual stuff about hotel rates and marriage agencies...

I was initially interested in Kiev, and still am, because I feel that there would be more chances of mixing with both local people as well as other expats, and I know there are some English language book shops, cinemas, live music bars etc etc etc..

So, if you have any info re Nikolayev, please post a reply, or email me at <[email protected]> ...I would appreciate it greatly.....

Enjoy the journey...vjk

Hi vjk,
Well, I've never heard of Nikolayev, but I've been in Ukraine for about 4 weeks now, and so far I have no problems here. The cost of living is slightly lower than the rest of Eastern Europe.
I can imagine that in Nikolayev, that there is not much of an expat scene. In most Ukrainian cities, there are not many expats at all, except Kiev and Odessa. Cinemas here usually show films dubbed in Russian..so I've been told. I haven't gone since I've been in Ukraine.
The people are ok. At times they seem a bit stand offish, but that's just their culture. Once they see that you're different, they will be very hospitable and will be interested.

Cheers,
Ibasiram.
