Hi everyone,
I am leaving for Central America in early September, and plan to travel/work for a year. Does anyone know if a mosquito net is necessary to bring when staying in cheap huts/hostels? Thanks for the info!

Hi Meagan,

I don't know about all of Central America, but when I stayed in Guatemala I was living up in the mountains, around 1,500m. I was told that I didn't need to worry about mosquitos because there were none so high up. Altitude apparently, is important.

I just purchased one for 6US...unless you appreciate the thought of a thousand tiny, vociferous, blood-sucking, disease-spreading, annoying little
creatures descending upon your delicate and fragile body in the dark, humid heat of the night...

yes, no worries in the high-altitudes.
I was originally in high alts too, but ended up travelling to more 'tropical' regions un-planned. BRING A MOSQUITO NET, AND BRING IT QUEEN-SIZE, so you can tuck it in under the mattress of the bed w/o issue -- also, in case the only bed avail in a hut or hostle happens to be a double mattress -- better to be safe than w/malaria.. It takes up space, but is at least very light!
Enjoy!
