I'm going to Honduras to persue some diving interests that I have. I'm a qualified esl teacher and I'm finishing up my first year in china. Is there any chance of me finding esl work in Honduras if I'm already there?

Yes sir, you can find teaching work there IF you have outside funds to support you. I would suggest heading there to the place you want to be and then putting up a sign offerring English classes. I did, but then again I was in Tegus, and I charged the going rate and kept busy enough, didn't make much money and had to use some of my savinbgs to live on, but if you have done a year in China, you might be able to make ends meet there. If you have dreams of living on the Bay Islands and teaching English between dive sessions then forget it. Places like La Ceiba, Trujillo or Tela on the north coast and Choluteca on the Pacific Coast are places where you would have your best chance.

Thanks...ya I was hoping to have my cake and eat it too but thats alright. I'm comming with my wife and if I get my dive masters cert. I might switch careers. The prices for diving in Utila are very cheap and they're always looking for dive masters. I guess there are other ways to see the world besides teaching English Very Happy

Is your wife Honduran or what? Don't be too anxious about making a living as a dive masters, I know of a couple on Utilla and they are not making a go of it on that income alone. And you would be hard pressed to find English teaching work on Utilla. I might suggest some good resources for you, including a mailing list that I am on. Just drop me a pm and I can send you the details.

Hey, no my wife's not honduran. My friend is in utila now working as a dive master and he's doing alright. I know that I wont find esl work on the bay islands but if its that hard to get by there we'll think of it as an extended holiday. Also there is a high demand for dive masters and instructors all over latin america. I've been told I'll need to dip into my savings living out there which is fine, I'm in China now saving quite a bit of cash. Any resourses you could provide me would be greatly appreciated, as I plan to as much research as possible before I go In Jan 05. Cheers Very Happy

If you knew where you wanted to live, I could probably offer some decent advice. Best jobs will be in San Pedro, the one place few people WANT to live! If you are still going, the Tegus English-Language paper is sometimes a good place to start, as are the ads in Heraldo. Here is the link to the English "rag", which has some interestig classified ads, every now and again: www.marrder.com/htw If the link doesnt work, just search for "honduras this week", the name of the paper. Best I can tell, you should chose where you want to live, and then seek out possibilities; the salaries are usually so low, it isnt worth moving to a place just for a job, not even the jobs in the capital, San Pedro, or La Ceiba. There are exceptions, but they probably will not open up to you until after you fulfill a contract or two, or are at a place longer than one year.
