I want to know what semarang is like? Please!
Food, night stuff, things to do blah blah. Prices of things compared to Jakarta. Is it nice or horrible? You know the drill.
Thanks to anyone who can answer!!

I was posted there for one week, and couldn't wait to get out of the place.

It's heaps hotter than say, Yogyakarta. This is because there's a ridge of hills behind the city, blocking breezes etc. It seemd to have all the usual shops etc.

There are numerous posts about Semarang on this site, and most of them I have contributed to, you should scroll down and take a look, but in answer to your specific points:

FOOD: Not bad, if you like bland noodles. There are a few nice Chinese restaurants (by nice, I mean nice food, not setting or ambience), there was a really cool (and expensive) Thai place and the usual western chains (quite expensive, the locals tend to only go to them for a treat). Local food is very cheap.

NIGHLIFE: 3 or 4 bars/clubs. Two are ridiculously seedy. All have AWFUL music (think live cover bands with a singer who can't find a note, and sees Ricky Martin as the height of sophistication). There is better nightlife in nearby (3-4 hours) Yogyakarta.

THINGS TO DO: Go to the pool, watch heavily edited and mind-numbingly boring TV, go to the malls and be stared at.

Seriously, almost anywhere in this amazing country is better than that dump. Don't even consider it.

Thanks,
I read your posts and scrolled down to the old stuff about Semarang. I think I'll stick with the big Durian. It might be smelly and poisonous but hell, at least there's plenty to do. I actually like the madness of JK in a perverted (not sexually) kind of way.
Thanks.
