Just wondering if anyone who's applied for a job teaching EFL at a language school in Mexico has ever been turned down because he/she didn't have an EFL teacher-training certificate.
In other words, has a language school owner/director ever responded to an applicant with something similar to the following? "I see that you're a native speaker of English with a university degree and have had some interesting work experiences. However, I also see that you don't have an EFL teacher training certificate. Unfortunately, because you lack a certificate, I'm afraid I can't consider hiring you. If you had taken an EFL teacher training course, I'd have a position to offer you."
I may be wrong, but I just can't see that happening at language schools in the city where I live. Does it happen in other Mexican cities? Just curious. |

Never happened to me at a language school anywhere in the Mexico City/Toluca area. I had a B.A. and no certificate. Language schools (classes for the public and companies) fight over you if you are a native speaker and have a degree.
I can definitely see it happening in a SEP (government regulated) school, University or the Tec de Monterrey, though they sometimes make exceptions as well. Though the work would be by the hour and not a regular position. |
