In almost all of the job postings in the UAE, they state "competitive tax-free salary". Now for someone who has never worked in the Middle East, how much is this? I understand that the salaries vary, but what is the range here for good university positions?

If you work for ATI you might get 10,000 dhs. If you work for HCT you may start at around 13,000 with regular raises to a ceiling of perhaps 16,000. The PI starts off with a salary of 15,000. The MLI with a little less. UAEU is said to be the most pleasant place to work along with Sharjah University. It depends on what you are looking for. Also remember that the salary comes with a decent benefits package including education for kids, flights home yearly, housing allowance, even a furniture allowance as most flats / houses arerented empty.

Thanks Wigwam. This helps.
Another question, when is the best time of year to apply for positions in the universities for a September start? Is September the usual starting date?

Gordon,

For next September, I would send in my CV ASAP. Hiring is already in full swing... not that they will make any prompt offers, but they normally do the last of the interviewing at TESOLArabia in March.
