Hi there!
I was just writing to ask anyone (or everyone, for that matter) about their experiences working and living in Canada.
My girlfriend may need to study in Canada for around a year. Although it could be a long time coming, I'd thought I'd start early in sussing out my options for living and working (or possibly even studying) in Canada. I'm an Australian citizen, which as far as I know, may help. When the time comes, I'd hope to have completed a TESOL certificate, and have at least a year's experience teaching English overseas.
Alternatively, I'd be prepared to do other lines of work, such as manual labour, or studying. Maybe I could study for a bit, doing a short course, and then put this to work doing bartending, or something like that. I don't know, I'm really just testing the waters now. I would like to study my Master's in Linguistics sometime in the future, so doing the first year of that in Canada could be an option.
I'm not planning to go to Canada to take on the world, I'd just like to be with my girlfriend for a year, so really, I'd be prepared to do a crappy job (hey, I've done lots of them before). So, really I'd just like to know what lines of work are available, and what kinds of things should I be wary of, or looking for when preparing to work in Canada.
I know there is an arrangement where in 2003, there were 6000 work visas were available for Australians on a first come, first served basis. I'm not sure, but the work visias may only be for 6 months. Has anyone had any experience with similar arrangements, and if so, what lines of work are you inevitably led into?
Thanks!

if you haven't already, you could try the oceania and canada boards there: do a search first, because this topic is covered a lot.
for the legal end, try www.gc.ca, and use their search engines.
good luck! |
