India is a fascinating country, but beware! Pickpockets, scam artists and other thieves abound, and stealing is actually seen by many here as a legitimate career! They reason that this person is doing something, so it's their livlihood.
I am in Bangalore working at a call centre as a Language Specialist and really am enjoying my position. Only problem is the Indian food - while delicious, the totally hot and spicy version gets old after awhile - I crave a hamburger! They can be gotten here, but you really have to look hard.
So where's everybody working here in India, and where are you from?

I have never worked in India, but I have been there many times.I have been to Bangalore a few times. Mutton burgers would be the closed thing you could get . Are there many teaching jobs there? I would love tp wprk in India.
How did you feel when you arrived? Did you have culture shock. I really enjoyed it from the minute I got there. There are pickpockets everywhere not just India. |

There are pickpockets everywhere but India is the only place I ever had someone shove a leprous hand in my face asking for money.
Amazing place. I was thinking of going there in January but I missed my chance I think. At this point the ticket and visa would be a little difficult to arrange and I wouldn't have enough time to actually spend there.
So you're doing the call center thing. Does it seem a little dishonest to you? How do you feel about that? It's a tempting job.
Know what you mean about the spicy food. |

Wow, an Indian forum. Congradulations!
I'm also in Bangalore, flew in from Dehli and am just sightseeing now.
No problems with pickpockets, but alot of children come close and just 'hang around' foreigners. A horde of beggars, especially in Mumbai.
Has anyone been to Goa? I'm going there in a few days. |

I used to play with the beggars there.I went to Goa years ago- if you like techno parties- it's the place to go. I like Diu a lot better. It is a small island of the southern tip of Gujarat. |

Many of the beggar-women and girls in Mumbai are also prostitutes by night. In the Colaba district, there are many brothels right beside Internet cafes and guest houses for foreigners. I was accosted a few times and they quote prices that match age groups Sad as hell.
I've seen a foreigner hand out candies in a big bag to the many children there on the street, it was a very smart thing and touching to see that....the children became children again, grabbing for candies and laughing with each other. |

Yes, I have heard about the prostitutes in that area.God, you poor dear- run, run, run! There were ladyboy ones in New Delhi. They used to bother my then boyfriend, lol. I was once in the parking lot of the bus station on Madras .Some kids were asking for money. We started plying with them and the next thing you know they were teaching us how to count in Tamil. They hung out with us until our bus left. |

I am also working in a call center, but I don't know what this means. Dishonest in what way?
The company I work at does not have us teach Indians to speak or even act like Americans/Canadians. They stress that we are here to help them be more communicative and be aware of cultural sensibilities of customers from North America. |

Wow, if that's true it would be a cool job. I just always heard that they were trying to mimic being americans. Strange that I never questioned this. I guess I was reading anti-outsourcing propaganda from the states. When I think about it, this would be an entirely improbable goal, to get everyone to sound just like a North American.
So they still sound like Indians and there is no attempt to be misleading?
That's good news. Thanks for putting me straight. I feel a little bit better about the world. |
