Hello there,
I have read some really positive things about teaching in schools in Poland i.e. hard work, low pay but rewarding! I would like to set something up for the coming academic year (primary and /or secondary) . I have a TEFL and a year of experience (albeit mainly business English). Do I need a PGCE? I have heard that I don`t.
I have read that I need to apply directly to the headmasters. Is this right? If so, where do I start?
I am currently teaching in Buenos Aires and return at the end of Aug. I therefere need to get this set up from here! Is this possible?
I know that various charities can set things up, but I need a paid post as I have spent all my savings on Argentinian wine!
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,
I haven't worked for state schools, but I did know a couple of such teachers during my five years in the country. You don't need a PGCE and you can indeed apply directly - in one case a friend was recruited by the parent of a child she was teaching privately, and I myself was propositioned to work in one.
I think your points about the work benefits and disbenefits are broadly correct - I wouldn't underestimate the poorness of the pay, though. You'd certainly have to teach privately as well to make ends meet, although, again, the parents would probably approach you anyway. And the hours of basic employment are low.
Some jobs come with accommodation thrown in - quality varies - and you will probably enjoy a certain status, although the Polish teachers will be aware that your pay is probably higher than theirs!
Hope this helps - I can't give contact details, I'm afraid, but the country's great and I still miss it after eighteen months away! |
