Hello everybody, I am a student interested in studying in Russia and I would like to know about your lives and experiences in Russia. What are you doing there and how did you go about getting there? Is it a nice place to live and what are the pros and cons? What is student life like?

Sorry if these questions are too general but I really have no idea what I'd be in for.

Thanks a lot!
спасибо

Hi,

You'll find a lot of info on this very question if you trawl the forum a bit.

A lot depends on what part of Russia you go to, what you do there, etc.

As far as I can make out, Americans are a shade or two less popular than Brits or Aussies. I've never known any New Zealanders here, but I guess they'd be treated the same as Australians, which is pretty good. Oz is a big destination for emigrating Russians.

One of my neighbours didn't speak to me for almost two years because he thought I was 'just another American'. I explained I was Scottish and he started making up for lost time.

Student life is ridiculously good. You can live in a hostel where even the rats complain about the cockroaches, pay pennies for it and drink, drink, drink. Travel is phenomenally cheap, and if you go to St. Pete's you are only about 8 hours from Tallinn or Helsinki. Buses to Tallinn leave several times a day, Helsinki has slightly less regular connections.

Museums, parks, other students, etc. etc. Meeting people couldn't be easier. Potential for adventure is enormous.

Ps - edited this to remove the asterisks from 'cockroaches' Smile

Do we live in the same country? You make Russia sound, well, attractive.

America is a big destination for emigrating Russians, as well. If I had a nickel for everyone I'd met who has an uncle, brother, father, daughter, nephew, son, sister in America.

Scotland on the other hand...

I keep trying to tell students to go to Scotland or Ireland or someplace actually INTERESTING. Where they can learn a really cool and unique accent. But noooo, they all want to go to America. Booooring.

I heard that we had winter, summer and autumn all in the space of two weeks in January. This is now officially winter 2005.

I've lived in San Francisco my whole life, and it wasn't until I returned to it from Russia that I realized just how many Russians are here. There's even a whole neighborhood here with Russian shops that truely are authentic (except you pay about $1.50 for a pirozhok, in Moscow you pay about .$30-$.60).

Every day, numerous times, I walk around and hear people speaking Russian and in a strange sort of way... feel home sick. Shocked

I found the same thing in Seattle but I think its mostly a matter of immigration having increased a lot since we were kids.
