They are doing a fine job! A fine job of whittling away at HCT's reputation, which has been slipping lately anyway.
Those are not Letters Of Intent, by the way. Letters Of Intent contain information about salary and benefits. The eagerly awaited missives might better be known as Letters Of Illusion.
(Now remember, Uncle Billy says No Global Emails!) |

So, are you two - or someone else - going to tell us what has actually happened with these letters?
Does this mean that each teacher now knows whether HCT 'intends' to keep them or not?

They said initially that they wanted to retain everyone but it appears as though that is no longer the case. At the last meeting P & B told everyone that there would be about 20% cut in staff (Based on "normal" attrition rates). As things progressed through last week it looks as though there could be even more involuntary cuts. While frequent at many HCT campuses, this type of thing has never really happened at MLI before. In addition, people don't know how these cuts will be made. Is it the oversight committee or is it true that the so-called MLI coordinators will actually determine the fates of all those poor souls.
Other news from the front line...
1. HCT/CERT will no longer be assisting teachers with out-processing, final settlements, and terminal leave issues with GHQ (particulary those that are wisely planning to go elsewhere) although they promised to do this a few months ago. Those that work for GHQ or who have worked for GHQ in the past will able to read between the lines on this one...
2. The MLI may or may not be closing on July 15 and people will take leave, unpaid leave or possibly even be able to come and hang out in the building if they so choose. If you can figure out that one then you are well ahead of the game...
3. Letters surveying prospective staff members as to whether or not they would like to work at MLI next year will possibly come out next week for those who survived the cuts. Before these are issued, however, staff will have to sit a short interview with B & P.
Things just keep getting better and better. |

Well yeah, can't get much better than that...
I hope everyone was successful at TESOL Arabia and once they get their Letter of Intent can say, 'thanks, but no thanks...' Way too much jerking people about here...
I suspect that early next September might be a good time for last minute job searchers to arrive in Abu Dhabi... they'll be out trolling the streets for teachers to fill the ranks at both HCT and MLI or whatever it will be called in its new incarnation.

So CERT has done their cutting, with all the skill and grace of a drunken moose.
If they were going to dump people who don't have master's degrees, why didn't they say so three months ago? Instead, they said over and over that it would all be based on performance. |

It's the Gulf - which has to be one of the most unprofessional and unethical places with regard to the treatment of employees (and I'm not just referring to teachers here) in the world.
Because you have no legal comeback!!

Actually well-travelled, I know of two groups of teachers who sued their employers and won. One group sued the military - this was the contract before MLI - where a Canadian company got paid by the government for all the salaries and housing expenses and skipped the country with all the 'fulus.' The teachers successfully sued the military to get their back pay and benefits as per their contracts. This was the early 90s.
I know some other teachers who sued Sharjah University for the amount of pay due to complete their contracts after being unfairly terminated. This was when SU was first opened and every year ended with firing half the staff - usually the Westerners.
But, the catch is that it takes at least a couple of years and you have to stay in the country to do it. Only the teachers who were able to get other jobs to let them stay collected their money.
To be honest, I think that this one could be taken to court and won. I believe that they have breached their contracts in a number of ways. But, would it really worth the aggravation... sometimes it is just much better for the stress level to get the heck out.

Ditto that! The contract . . . that's just a piece of paper anyway. What does it mean in Arabic? That's what really matters and what will be held to in the courts.
