Hey folks:
I am going to be moving to Santiago in a few months to teach English, and will likely be staying at a hostel until I find a place. Is there any place that you would recommend? (Preferably in a barrio that I would like to live in.) And or are there hostels that I should stay away from?

I haven't arrived yet to Chile myself, but Lonely Planet - Chile will be my primary resource. I would check your local library and check out the recommended hostels. -jen |

Thanks Jen:
I was hoping that some of the people on this forum would have some info about the Santiago Hostels that Lonely Planet didn't. Are you staying in a hostel when you first arrive?

La Casa Roja(in Barrio Brasil) immediatetly comes to mind, good location, about $9US per night. I stayed there in 2003 and the place was OK, they also offer fairly cheap curry dinners? |

I was just referred by my future boss to the Happy House Hostel, also in Barrio Brasil, I think. I won't arrive in Chile for another month, so I haven't stayed there yet, but it looks fairly cozy and charming.

great choices. anywhere in barrio brasil is a likely bet, though the HI hostel on Cienfuegos is a bit industrial feeling. Most foreigners live in Barrio Brasil or in Providencia (a vast area covering east of Plaza Italia/baquedano), but you probably won't find any youth hostels there. New hotspots are barrio universitario or republica (not far from b. brasil). But I don't know of any y. hostels there, either. hope it goes well! |
