Hey Everyone,
I just read on the Canadian Dept. of Foreign Affairs wesbite that they are recommending no Canadians travel to Indonesia due to recent terrorist attacks at foreigner-hangouts and political unrest. They also advise that any Canadians currently in Indonesia leave, unless their presence is absolutely necessary. I was planning to teach there (jakarta, to be specific) in Sept. Any comments????
Thanks,
Crystal |

I think it all comes down to what level of risk you're willing to accept. If you take a look at the warnings from various state departments, they have recommendations against travel to most Asian countries.
Personally I think you're probably in more danger in a place like Vancouver or Toronto than Jakarta. If you do go to Jakarta, do some research and take precautions against unnecessary risks. Did you notice what that same bulletin said kills more visitors to Indonesia than anything else? Not terrorism or disease, but getting into a motorbike accident without a helmet!

they have had that traveller's warning since the beginning of time. Pay no heed. I live in Medan, North Sumatera and not once in the 15 months I've been here, have I felt even remotely threatened. I can walk down the street at night by myself and that's something I might not do in some parts of town in Toronto.
Depending on where you want to go. I've never been to Jakarta, but I hear it can get a little crazy over there. Not due to terrorism or anything like that, but more like petty thievery, bag snatching an so forth. You'd do well to ask someone who lives there.
Don't let the propaganda deter you. Indonesia will be an amazing experience. Just do it. |

Read: New York, Madrid, London. There's a risk wherever you go. |
