Hi all,

I'm moving to Salamanca/Madrid in a couple weeks and want to be as prepared as possible. I'll be taking an old laptop that I am setting up w/ dual boot - XP Home English and XP Pro Spanish.

I'm wondering what I should add before coming over, especially so that I can get WiFi access where it's available, if it's available.

I'm also looking to buy a GSM cell phone before leaving b/c I read that that is almost required, especially during the job hunt. I've seen Tri and Quad bands. Will Tri-band be good enough for Madrid?

Thanks so much and please forgive the slew of posts that might pop up from me i the next few days. New questions arise daily but I'll try not to be a pest. Rolling Eyes

Hey rebate,

I'm not too familiar with the number of Wifi spots around Madrid where you can get access... but I know there are a few. As far as home based internet, most of the connections over here are going the way of wifi, so as long as you have a standard wifi PCMCIA card (or whatever they are called) for your laptop you should be able to connect with no problem.

Regarding the phone, a triband should work fine (my own phone is a triband and supposedly works in the states, though I bought it here).

Double check on prices though, cell phones are a lot more common place over here and might be cheaper too. Usually you can get a phone "pak," where you get a prepay phone, the prepay sim card and a decent amount of starting credit for a good deal.

Go to this link http://spaintalk.multimadrid.org/eve/ubb.x/a/tpc/f/1851030511/m/7171076511/p/1
(the forum its on is very useful for any Madrid questions you may have anyway) - my personal recomendations are: El Corte Ingles, (big Spanish depatment store chain), top floor, cafe, free, and also the Irish Rover pub, Northern business district, free with a pint (cant be bad)
