|
|
Hello,
In the mid-1990s I worked for two years at a primary school in Dubai teaching English to Emirati children. I didn't have an ESL-related qualification then and I don't now. Nor do I have a degree.
In November, I shall be accompanying my husband, who works in the oil industry, to Oman. I would very much like to teach English again and I have the opportunity to gain a TEFL qualification (probably CELTA) before leaving for Oman.
I have read from various web-based resources that only people with degrees are eligible to take up employment in Oman so I am wondering whether it is worthwhile taking a TEFL course. Naturally, I have no wish to break the laws of Oman but it is so very often the case the there are various legitimate ways around the rules.
I shall be grateful if anyone could give me an indication of prevailing conditions on the ground regarding English teaching and minimum qualifications.
Thanks,
Wander |

Hi
I would say to go ahead and get the CELTA. You should then be able to get some part time work, if not a contract. A degree is 'probably' required for a contract.

Thanks, VS. Doesn't husband-only sponsorship prohibit working or do the authorities turn a blind eye?

Having always been single, I never paid much attention to the logistics of it, but it seemed that plenty of the spouses were employed. I am assuming that the employers handled that paperwork.
