Hi. Umm, Cuba is considered part of the Caribbean, correct? Anyway, I was wondering if anyone new about any summer programs to teach ESL there. Could you let me know. I'd like to go there for part of the summer.

Not a chance on that island.

I've spent a fair amount of time there over the last 6 years. Even studied Spanish at a University.
I posted this reply before, but somehow in was listed under a different country.....possibly a problem with the board?

So far, there is no shortage of qualified people to teach ESL. If there was a small chance, you can bet that I would be on the next plane there.

The Cuban government simply will not allow ESL teachers from abroad take away much needed jobs in Cuba. Add that to the fact the many professors are lucky to earn USD 200 a month. I'm not even sure that they earn that much!

Do you want to TEACH in Cuba or just find a way to get there as a AMERICAN? citizen?

Teaching EFL in Cuba is DIFFICULT, but not impossible. Teaching English LEGALLY there is a different story. It would be almost IMPOSSIBLE to legally teach there as a foreigner, but you CAN get casual work teaching English, but dont expect ALOT or ANY pay... Cubans get paid a MAX of 200 USD/month, but MOST less than 40.

If you just want to visit as an American and you want to do it LEGALLY, there are a number of travel groups you can look into.

My apologies if this thread has been worked to death, but I'm going to ask anyway. Thanks for the information, Dave.

Something I've always wanted to do is to teach ESL in Cuba for a few months. I've taught in Mexico for a year and know a little Spanish. I would expect no pay and would do it for philanthropic reasons (and because I want to see Cuba).

Has anyone done this? Are there legal problems with teaching privates as an unpaid volunteer?

Take what you see/hear/read in the media with a generous pinch of salt. The Cubans have much bigger fish to fry than philanthropic backpackers. I�ve done (non-TEFL) volunteer work over there on a number of occasions and have had no problems whatsoever.
Having said that, if you go there with an underlying agenda such as spreading a religious or political message, you`ll be thrown out.
I recommend contacting your nearest Cuba solidarity organisation for information about volunteer programmes.

You teach for one month in Cuba with mentor teachers at your side.
