Maybe an old question, but I'll try....
I like the idea of working in Indonesia, but I also have debts. I've heard that there are a few jobs paying at international rates. True? I have a master's, a TESOL cert. and lots of experience teaching in Asia and the U.S. Thanks! |

For God's sake! Look through the old posts on this forum. It's not so difficult. Sorry, don't mean to sound nasty, but you aren't exactly being Mr/Mrs/Miss/Ms Originality with your line of questioning. Your questions have been answered many, many times before. |

Definitely recommend you try another country if you want to service debts in hard currency. |

As long as you don't hit the bars too often or want to dine out in the hotels your salary in both Indonesia & China will go a long way - in my experience at least. |

As has been said many times, if you don't hit the bars, don't make 'loans'
to friends, one can save a little each month and have enough to travel at the end of or during the contract.
I tried hard to save 20% of my salary for overseas use, but U$60.00 a month didn't amount to a helluva lot, and I had quite a struggle. I gave up in the end and just enjoyed myself! There's plenty of nice places to go to in Indonesia, and holding a KITAS does mean admission to places such as Borobodur at local prices. One of the few perks. |

True. When you pay 60,000+Rp for a beer in a nightclub, your money won't go very far if you do that a lot.
The first six months I taught in Indonesia I saved almost nothing. I realized that I needed to start banking some money halfway through my contract, and over the last six months I saved up $5,500 US. And yes, I did live reasonably comfortably, travelled, and dined out a lot.
If you want to save money, stay out of the bars. |

Bloody hell, Rp.60.000 for a beer??!! I assume that's in Jakarta.
Not going to bars is sound advice. |

60k for a beer is swish nightclub price in Jkt. Spirits are also phenomenally expensive. A bottle of Bintang in a warung would cost a fraction of that. |

Sorry for the late response, but I've been away.
Wow, someone saved U$5,500 in six months. Isn't that around Rp55 juta!! That's well over a year's pay for most schools outside of Jakarta.
Good luck if you can do it. you must lke nasi goreng a hulluva lot! |

its strange how 1 or 2 beers at a westerners bar can sometimes equal the cost of a nights accomodation. that doesn't really happen in oz. changes yr perspective on priorities. |
