Thanks

I tried to teach there after 6 years in Asia, but TESLA wasn't good enough. Had to be a degree.
I do know that following some big rip-offs of Asian students in Australia some years ago, the schools have to be licensed and meet quite strong Federal Govt criteria. |

Do you need a degree in ESL or just a degree? |

I'm fairly certain that the degree would need to be in English Teaching. The Government now have quite strict guidelines about English teaching in Australia, following some problems with Mickey Mouse schools a few years ago. A heap of overseas students staged demos etc, and some schools closed before courses were completed. When the dust settled, new guidelines came out, which even included student kitchen facilities I believe, and of course, qualifications of teachers had to be good. |

I got several esl jobs in perth withing hours of starting to look - about this time last year
I walked in the door with my CV, and made sure I spoke to a DoS or someone who can meke decisions
good ones to try are Central TAFE, Cambridge, and World.
they will want either experience or a TEFL certificate, AND a degree (in something) |

Yes, sad to say, your degree can be in anything, and not necessarily tied to language teaching.
We had some degreed teachers without TESOL in Indonesia in various schools, and the students suffered. |

Hi Tim, would be grateful if you could give me some more info on the esl scene in Perth.
So you reckon it's pretty easy to get work with a TEFL, a degree and some experience?
Whats the pay like? And the hours? do the contracts tend to be short-term? I'm looking to migrate under the points system-am a French teacher in uk but think chances of finding work in that field in Perth its elf may be slim, hence am looking into esl scene instead.
Any tips/advice would be great. thanks. |

you probably would not get a permanent job in the field until you'd been casually working there for a couple of years.
There certainly is work, as I described above, but only enough to live on
Qualfications and experience are likely to add points to your immigration application, but not land you a permanent job
I'd have thought they needed French Teachers... |
