Just thought I'd run a quick check on the proportion of people in ESL called Dan. |

Your full name isn't Dan D. Lion, by any chance?
Do you hang out with your friends or just Dan-gle? |

Irish your post is dan tacky in light of the real submarine history of Pearl Harbor.
Where is that Dan Kimo when ya need him?
The Japs sent a sub that the US navy sank one hour before the surprise air attack. |

Uh, Linda, "Jap" is a pretty offensive term for "Japanese." |

Lucy thanks.
Politicaly correct or not, that is what I read in a recent newspaper article from Honolulu. |

It's not a matter of being PC or not. If I use the word n***** to refer to a black person, am I simply being non-PC?
Somehow I doubt that a newspaper in Honolulu would use the word "Jap" in an article, unless they're directly quoting from something that written before or during WWII. Provide a link to prove me wrong. |

Frankly Lucy I do not give a rip what you chose to believe or not believe and if you want to prove me wrong, do your own GDF research. I stand by my post! |

Hey! Who's been hijacking my thread?
What I want to know is: What are we going to do about the serious lack of Dans in the teaching profession. my survey clearly shows that I am the only Dan currently working in ESL. This can surely only be put down to massive anti-Dan discrimination.
This is a short-sighted approach from employers who are failing to capitalise on the extensive pool of talent that people called Dan represent. The only solution as far as I can see is positive discrimination so to all you employers out there, next time you have a well-paid teaching job, give it to a bloke called Dan!
Maybe there should be some sort of Dan quota, every employer should have at least one Dan in their employ.
I'm off to write to my MP now, I may be some time. |

Sorry, Dan, I know that the lack of Dans in ESL is a pressing issue, but I've been provoked.

You raised the issue, my dear, by using a frankly racist term in your post and saying that you read it in a Honolulu newspaper. Again, I find it hard to believe that a newspaper in Hawaii, with its large Japanese population, would use the term "Jap" in an article. If you're standing by your post, then give me a link (or at least the name of the paper and the issue date) so I can see for myself. Couldn't be simpler. |

I've always regarded the term as a simple abbreviation and not as something "frankly racist." Then again, I'm not Japanese.
Are there any Japanese teachers out there who can give us their opinion of it? |
