I am exploring my possibilities of teaching English in Australia. I have a b.a. with a major in TEFL. From what i have been reading it's fairly difficult for u.s. citizens to get a teaching contract in australia. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this for me. What is the best way to go about getting a teaching job in australia for a u.s. citizen? how easy is it to get a job? any info/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Yes, it is fairly difficult, but take a look at the Australian Immigration website http://www.dimia.gov.au, they have lots of information there, and you might find a loophole that allows you in.

Good luck!

D-rail,

When browsing the Immigration Dept web page, keep a lookout for links dealing with Working Holiday Visas. How old are you ? I'm not absolutely sure, but I think that the maximum age for such Visas is 30.

If you come into Australia on a Student's Visa, you are usually allowed to work for up to 20 hours per week. This option might be worth considering, especially if you are already contemplating doing a Master's degree - bearing in mind, also, that tuition fees in Australia are usually lower that what you'd be charged for back in the States.

It appears that many (most ?) teaching jobs at language schools, in Australia, are on a casual or part-time basis. However, you could also try getting some private tutoring work by, say, placing ads on noticeboards at universities, TAFE colleges, and the "community boards" at those supermarkets frequented by newcomers from non-English speaking backgrounds.

Which part of Australia are you hoping to go to ? Check the Yellow Pages and contact some of the language schools. In Melbourne, probably the largest one is Holmes Institute. They also have branches in other parts of Australia, eg the Gold Coast. Thus, if you manage to get a job at Holmes, in Melbourne, they might be able to recommend you to their other centres when you decide to "move on".

thanks for the replies. i have gone on to the immigration website and it looks like the an education visa might work. it gives me the time that i need but i cant remember off hand what the work stipulations are. As for the idea of hooking up with an organization like Holmes Institute, i like that idea. If the organization and the visa would permit it that would be very nice. i am not sure about posting on the community boards. i dont like the idea of going to australia with no job security whatsoever. that may work after i am a little established, for some extra cash, but it may be difficult initially. A few questions; are there any other large organizations such as the Holmes Inst.? i want to get as many options as i can. Also, i have searched the internet with countless hours, but have not found any websites that really cater to tefl in australia. are there any out there?
thanks for all the help

Well, I've found two, but they are of varying value.

http://www.neasaustralia.com/
http://www.elicos.com/

There's a lot of different information there, but the best thing is the list of accredited schools.

Good luck!

what are the chances of turning the working holiday visa for North Americans into something long term? I mean if your employer likes you and you are qualified (i.e. M.A. in ESL), is it possible for your employer to sponser you for a working visa after the working holiday visa is over?

Australian laws stipulate that if you wish to change your visa class [eg, temporary to permanent, student to working], you need to re-apply from outside the country: essentially go back home.
However, with sponsorship from an employer, your chances of coming back on a permanent resident visa would be good.

If you're here on a student visa you can legally work up to 20 hours a week during term time, and unlimited hours during vacation; there's plenty of seasonal [manual] work around over the long summer break.

To check out jobs, try www.careerone.com.au then enter ESL as your search term. There are plenty of ESL colleges around, although the hiring cycle for Term one, starting soon, appears to have finished. They generally work on 10 week renewable contracts. If you were doing a TESOL masters [eg Macquarie University Sydney but there's plenty of others], you'd find they offer part time courses with after-hours classes, as many of the students are practising teachers.

Sydney has a considerably higher cost of living than other cities. Places like Adelaide, Hobart, Perth, Brisbane are worth looking into.

Hope this helps: let me know if anything I've said doesn't check out.

ps if interested I can give you a link to an American managed ELICOS set up that often hires part-time. PM me.

Super Mario, thanks for the info. I will start looking into it. When I am done in Korea, I will look into making the move. I would like to be able to speak to people in English.

On the ESL jobs on this site want someone with residency. Looks like I am out of luck.

Looks like I will have to look into Study Group Australia. The main thing is I need to become a certified teacher and then I should be able to find a job in Australia. How much do M.A. programs in Australia cost?

Hi,

I'm from Canada. I came here to do my M.ed. with a concentration in TESOL.

I'm still here as a dependent on a student visa, cause my partner is doing a Master's I have no work limitations.

But getting work in Oz is difficult, if you are looking for a professional environment. Getting work at an ELICOS school is much easier, but the conditions and salary are not as good.

Important thing to keep in mind is the ESL is seasonal, and right now things are entering the slow season. Summer is the busiest.

If you want to stay in OZ the best thing to do is get a teaching certificate and do some remote area teaching.

Good luck with your decisions.

Cheers,

Chonbuk
