Hello all- I've been researching teaching abroad for months and I'd love to go to Spain if possible. The only thing I've found is Canterbury English which is based in Madrid. It's a TEFL course and it guerentees you a job in Spain after the course. I want to know if this is ligit. It also says up to 25 hours a week. I'm afraid that will mean they will only give me a couple hours a week and I won't be a ble to live on it. Does anyone know about this, the company, etc. Otherwise could someone give me a few hints as to find a job somewhere else? It diesn't have to be teaching. I'd really appriciate a response... thanks so much! Razz

There are many course providers here. Try a web search using the keywords "TEFL," "CELTA" and "Madrid." Id also work on your spelling: its a bit weak.
Remember, to work here legally youll need an EU passport.

I'm looking for specific TEFL courses such as canterbury and whether or not they are sincere about their promises. Thanks for the spelling tips, maybe you should learn how to read before criticizing me.

What I said about your spelling was not a personal attack; it was constructive criticism. If you cant take it then you shouldnt even consider teaching.
My original advice stands: shop around, because there are many course providers here. Check out the Spain Job Information Journal.

The two most widely recognised courses are CELTA and Trinity TESOL. You can check out course locations on their websites

http://www.cambridge-efl.org/teaching/celta/index.cfm
http://www.trinitycollege.co.uk/index.cfm?fuseaction=tesol.home

I can't say whether Canterbury English will fulfill its promises, although "up to" doesn't sound like a very firm promise.

does anyone know anything about the company Caterbury English? They promise a job after the TEFL course- that's why I'm looking at that specific company

Ive posted my message for comments on a company in Madrid called EBC. I called them and the course was explained clearly and their job placement service seems very good.

My advice is speak to the schools youve selected. I did (from the US, expensive, but maybe better than getting ripped off later on!)

I guess Im just looking for more, more and more confirmation that I am making the right choice.

I appreciate any comment you can give.

Michelle

Hi,

I can tell you personally that Canterbury English has gotten its (good) reputation by hiring non EU citizens.....and yes, they will give you classes. I'm not sure they can "guarantee" you a job, but I wouldn't worry if I were you....

25 hours a week is the most you should teach anyway....any more than that and you will be overwhelmed (think about the time spent planning lessons and correcting papers, 25 hours of teaching is equivalent to 40 hours of work)

About Canterbury, I know people who have worked with them and say they are reliable
