In a post someone said that it's best to go to Taiwan either just before the Chinese New Year or in August. Does anyone know why before the Chinese New Year, and how soon before it?

Thanks.

many foreign teachers run away during the break. schools will are anxious to get new faces ASAP.

winter is drawing to a close. yeah, yeah, minnesota this and anchorage that...springtime is nice anywhere.

when is chinese new year? it is a moveable feast somewhat akin to easter in that it changes every year and only the adepti of arcania seem to know precisely when it'll fall. heard it has something to do with groundhog day but can be roused to verify such.

Actually it is better to arrive just after Chinese New Year than just before. All schools will be closed for at least a week over Chinese New Year and you aren't going to find a job at a school that isn't open! Also Chinese New Year is not a good time to travel anywhere, so you'll find yourself newly arrived with nothing to do.

It's best to arrive about ten days after Chinese New Year. All the schools will be open again and many will be looking for teachers.

To find the date of Chinese New Year click here. In 2004 it's January 22.

Definitely after Chinese New Year. It is considered bad luck to hire people before the new year. It is also considered bad luck to owe people money over the New Year so many schools will pay to date, right before the break.

Thanks to all for the helpful info. How long does Chinese New Year last? And someone suggested seeking work approx. 10 days after it's over. Do you agree/disagree? Thank you again for insight. This board is helping my boyfriend and me as we make our travel plans.

Jobs available after the Lunar New Year are usually result of a teacher walking off the job.
You must take into consideration that many teachers will break their contract because their job is unbearable. For them to do this they lose pay and face unofficial deportation. Things have got to be pretty bad at those schools for the teachers to do that. .

Generally the official holiday is about five days. Most schools would close for a week. By ten days after the new year business and life would be back to normal more or less.
