hello there, i'm a first time poster from canada who is looking to move to taiwan next month to teach english. i plan on arriving without a job and settle in a town/city to south before seeking employment.

my question is regarding climate and air quality. i know the heat is unavoidable but are there cities where the air quality is cleaner than others (ie. less smog & pollution)? the two cities i am most considering are taitung and kaosiung. if anybody would be able to give an informed opinion here, it would be much appreciated.

as well, if there are other cities in southern part of country that i should consider, please advise. thanks in advance
david

Kaoshiung has dirty air and you can't use the water to water plants or for personal consumption. It does have a lot of jobs and the cost of living is lower than Taipei. You can easily get foreign food.

Taidong is a lot cleaner, but you still have to boil the water like you do in Taipei after you filter it. The air is much cleaner, but jobs are scarce and the Foreign Affairs Police will bust you for being illegal in a heartbeat. You'll have to go to Amigo's(foreign pub) and ask around for jobs or hope something pops up on a website. I've never seen an ad for a job in Taidong, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. Be prepared to have to wait a month or two to find a job though and possibly four. Foreign food is hard to come by, but pig skin(tattoos included) can be bought with any bowl of noodles.
