I'm trying decide if a teaching opportunity is competitive or not. I haven't really been job searching much so I don't know what's out there. I'd like to see how it compares to other teacher's situations.
Here are the job basics:
30 contact classsroom hours per week (large classes)
$18 per hour
3 weeks paid vacation
no benefits
test prep., planning, etc. are done on own time at home--no OT

In Los Angeles, at my job:

36 contact classroom hours per week (classes tend to be below 25)
$17 per hour
4 weeks paid vacation, but only after you've been working for them for 6 months, and only when they tell you (at the end of each 12 week quarter)
no benefits
test prep., planning, etc. are done on own time at home--not OT

In Honolulu:
16-18 hours per week. (Class size between 6-16, usually around 8-10).
$19 per hour.
No holiday or vacation pay.
Paid admissions to attractions like Sealife Park, Pearl Harbor, etc. when accompanying students.
Testing, marking, lesson planning on my own time. No OT.
But even though this sounds dire, and I found out it isn't easy to survive in Honolulu on this, I enjoyed the job and the people I worked with were quite friendly. Now I am in New Zealand teaching ESL and I occasionally get nostalgic for the Aloha State.

My old job in Bloomington (with a high cost of living for Indiana):
5, 10, 15, or 20 contact hours per week.
about $40/hour that you spend in the classroom.
unlimited photocopying,
paid trips if you accompany students (chicago, indy, king's island, etc),
benefits for full-timers, which are few. everyone gets to use univ facilities too.
class size: 4-15 students.

additional income for people in our dept:
grading GED essays= $14/hour
tutoring students = $20/hour minimum.

a full time teacher who tutors a lot could make up to $40,000 and probably save half of that. unfortunately, the jobs no longer exist.

why is anyone teaching huge classes for $15/hour?????????
there was no end to people willing to pay me $20 or more per hour for personal tutoring, conversation, etc. i was actually living on tutoring (about 12 hours/week) for almost 6 months.

happily employed in mexico,
matt

I was getting $25/hour for one-to-one classes. It was a part-time, hourly thing (which was fine since I was in school at the time), so no extra pay for prep time, holidays, etc. We did get paid for our weekly meetings, though, and we could use the resources & photocopier.

I had that job while working towards my MA--the pay went up to $30 for teachers with an MA in hand.

Other jobs at my school were $35 to $40 per hour, for small groups. Again, I think they were all hourly, sans benefits.

Denise and Matt,

Nice sounding gigs. Those seem to be the exception rather than the rule, though. I had something like that through a program at a uni in Chicago, but I knew I was floating in a gravy boat... universities are the way to go, that is for sure, but good luck getting in. THAT is why people are teaching huge classes for $15 an hour... its got to be the love, it ain't the loot!

Washington D.C.

$12 - $15 per hour.

No prep-time (this is at two of the bigger schools, one of which has three branches) the school I was at cut prep-time after Sept 11, though tuition did go up. Once class sizes returned to pre-9/11 levels, you might think the sons-of-biscuits would restore preptime. Nope...

Benefits? Well, many of my students invited me to come eat at the places where they waited tables... however, free/discounted fajitas and green curry only goes so far. I was always hoping to get a student who could get me a deal on some dental insurance, but it never happened... Rolling Eyes
