I've been following the election closely, but I figured that this wasn't really the best forum to discuss it.

It was big news on the teev here last night Mike. I sometimes feel that all of Latin America is in a state of political flux, which I find exhausting and depressing to keep up with. Being Sunday night and all, I settled for the Friends marathon instead.

Here's the low-down:

Having the right to vote for a selection of political candidates is a system set up to give the people the illusion of choice. Nothing changes, no matter who's in power.

It is just an illusion, there is only one agenda--to keep the wealth of the country in the hands of the few. You'll see this in any 'developing' country. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The rest are kept in a loop where they have just enough money to get by.

LOL Melee....but your tongue-in-cheek comments are well-timed. Under the Mexican Constitution foreigners don't have the right to involve themselves in the political affairs of the country. Many internet forums frequented by foreigners prohibit touching the subject, much less allowing posts expressing personal viewpoints about Mexican political affairs from a foreigners standpoint. One blog I follow has asked his readers not to post personal comments about Mexican politics.

Some expats usually will do anything to cling to what they have and some live in fear of deportation.In other countries, people have been threatened or actually deported for comments made on the internet. In fact, in some countries, even posting on a blacklist site like Teflwatch can get you criminal charges.

I personally think Mexican sites are going overboard. Mexico is not a banana republic.

How's this for commentary

In the Mixteca there was 80% voter turn out. Pretty amazing, considering that in many communities in the Mixteca, more than 50% of the registered voters are living outside of the Mixteca.

The election voter turn-out across Mexico was pretty impressive this election. That's good to see.
