This is our 2nd year in China. The first year was tough for our daughter, then 14.She became depressed and went back to the US last December and returned in April.
Because there is no international school in Nanchong, her schooling is done mostly on-line. We also teach her. Luckily, she does have the convenience of keeping in touch with her brothers and friends on the internet.
She has made friends and is learning Chinese. She gets out and about with kids her own age and a couple who are 18 (university students) and is now enjoying the Chinese culture. I think this experience has made her mature emotionally and she has expressed NOT wanting to leave for a few more years.
Everybody's experiences are different. To those of you who consider coming to China with school aged children, explore all options. Really think hard about it before you come here. Some kids adjust - some don't Good luck! |

Aye, Mister Al, it is for love that I am here. I love Chinese people. I do not have a wife sir. Sacrifice? I would not even call it that. I do know that I love to help people in need and however pretentious it may sound
I see that the people of China need my help and most are very accepting of it. I in turn receive as much from them as I give to them. I am here on my own accord and most times I quite enjoy myself here. There are realities to every situation in life and they must be brought to the forefront. It is not good, it is not bad, it just is. We must all make our own choices in life and some of us ask advice of others, I provide only the evidence of my experiences. |

I have a few foreign kids in my classes this year. There is a boy in Grade 1, and his sister in Grade 3. They are the children of two of the teachers over at the High School, who have been here about 8 years. They spend the academic year in China, and the holidays in China. I asked them why they sent their kids to the ESL Primary School, rather than the main international primary school, and they said it was so that their chinese would get really good. It must be quite odd for them though, being in classes which are virtually all Chinese (well I also ahve a few Koreans and Japanese, and a Russian kid). |
