|
|
1) Was I correct in reading that Japanese language courses are provided? Is this free of charge, or just reduced in cost for JETS in ALT positions?
2) What are the interviews like? Are these conducted in a one-to-one or group setting where teaching demos are done (ala Nova)? I can't seem to get any info about the structure of these interviews.
3) When teachers choose to stay another year (extend the contract), is there a pay raise given? Or are all the benefits the same in subsequent years as they are in the first?
4) Is private teaching a big no-no for Jet ALTs? |

These are specific questions about JET so I think that they are legitimate. If you were simply asking "What is JET like?" then I would be more likely to give the answer that G Cthulhu gave.
Big Daikon is a site for JET participants therefore they will probably have more in depth answers to your questions.
However I can answer one of your questions.
Number 2) The interview I went to with JET involved three people. One of them seemed to have an in-depth knowledge of Japan and may have worked for the Embassy in my home country. His questions were specifically about my interest in Japan.
One of them was clearly an ex-JET whose questions were about how I would conduct my lessons and what I could offer the school other than ALT work. She asked me about how I would set up certain activities if I was trying to teach a particular language target.
The third person was a Japanese woman who asked me certain trivial questions about Japan such as "Who is the Prime Minister?" and "What is the national sport of Japan?"
I was offered a place but for better or for worse I had already accepted a position with an eikaiwa company. |

Matt, thanks for asking those questions. I submitted an application for a JET ALT position and am just curious to see if I make it to the round of interviewing.
Am already thinking about the interviewing and naturally would like to be "somewhat prepared" for it if I make it.
We'll be piecing more information in the next weeks about the JET SET. I'll be talking to some former JETs at my grad school to get some insights.
Regards,
fat_c

Nah, just thinking that people could save a lot of bandwidth by doing their own homework. |

Glenski,
As always, your help is most appreciated. Many thanks for the links.
Maybe I'll be in Japan as of July '007?
We shall see...
But a move by Fat_C back to Asia is preliminarily anticipated...hopefully.
Best,
