Hello,
Could someone tell me what the good buys are in Thailand? I know each country has specifics. For example South Korea has nice emeralds.
Does Thailand offer any specific kind of jewellery?
I appreciate any information.
Thank you,
June

Thailand has a thriving gem market with emeralds, topaz, saphhires, pearls etc. The important thing is to not be ripped off by the famous gem scam i.e. don't buy gems from a place that you were taken to by a tuk tuk or taxi driver or any other person you have just met.

Another type of jewelry that is very popular is silver.

My children went to the Witaed school in Samuthprakarn for a couple of years until a week or two ago. I can't speak from the point of view of a teacher, I'm afraid, but as a parent.

The school is a pleasant place, attended by a lot of wealthy parents, and situated at the edge of the shrimp farms of Samuthprakarn, which is a very peaceful area. The school is on the border of Bangkok, but the area is like rural Thailand - canals, coconut palms, banana trees, etc. That's why I bought a house here. It takes 30 minutes to drive to the Chao Phraya river. There's a bus from near the school that will take you close to Sathorn Bridge which is not far from one of the main business / shopping areas, Silom.

I was always impressed by the dedication, hard working nature, and joviality of the foreign teachers. There will always be someone who is not that happy with some aspect of a school, but the teachers always seem pretty motivated and dare I say happy. I think the salary was between 25,000 - 30,000 Baht per month. I don't know what the benefits are.

If you like to be in the centre of Bangkok, then this is not for you. If you like to watch the sun rise over shrimp ponds, listen to birds, and enjoy some peace, while still being close to the buzz of Bangkok, then this school's location might appeal to you.

The school has a web site, and I would imagine that the contact person is Acharn Saijai (a woman).

I hope this helps any prospective applicants.
