The after SARS students are supposed to show up now; filling up the classrooms of Aoteroa......is this happening?
Specifically: To Kereru: What is the situation in Christchurch?
Since I have bought a house in Kaiapoi and hope to be in Chch ASAP, depending on the "speed" of the Immigration Dept.,I love to know. |

Sorry Peter, As you may have noticed, I've been so busy that I haven't been here for a couple of months. I'm one of the lucky ones. In the past 2 months 2 large NZ-wide private schools have folded & a 3rd laid off 6 teachers last week. There are several obvious problems:
#1 the rising NZ$ makes us less cost-competitve with Australia
#2 the obsession of the NZ media with "Asian crime" - and the comparable obsession of the Chinese media for repeating it.
#3 some shonky & greedy practices in the private ELT sector.
IMO NZ in general (& Chch in particular) is still a safe & value-for-money destination for Asian students. OTH the ratio is altering as more students from SEA, Russia & the ME come here. This will be a good thing (for the Chinese students as well) as too many students of the same nationality means they might as well have stayed at home. |
