The harsh reality is that without a degree you are going to have problems finding a reasonable job in TESOL anywhere.

I do NOT wish to revive the whole discussion about degree or no degree. I just want to point out the real situation.

No need to point it out to me. I'm a dedicated and committed teacher with a hoard of good references, a CELTA, plenty of proven results and five years' experience who can't get a look in because Jack Jones with his BA in social sciences and intention to backpack it around the world on the cheap can blag any job worth having.

Bitter? Let's see if I can find the answer on the bottom of this bottle of raki.

It is possible to get a degree by Distance Learning. University of London. Open University. And lots of other distance learning programmes. It might be possible to get on a Distance MA programme, even without a first degree.

If you are going to stay in the field it would make sense.

I'd certainly look into any possibility. Are distance learning courses expensive?

My problem is that if I took another degree course in the UK I wouldn't be funded by the government because I've already taken one degree. It would be near impossible to pay the fees these days by working and also free up enough time to make a decent job of studying. I've considered studying abroad but mostly the same situation applies.

It's a bit of a catch 22. I can't get reliable income without a degree, yet I can't afford to pay my way through school without a reliable source of income.

I can't say how much. You would have to do the research on costs yourself.

You should look into it. And remember that the horizon is wider tha the UK. USA, Australia and maybe other countries have highly-developed distance learning programmes.

As I said some of those MA programmes might accept you without a first degree. The other possibility is to do the Trinity Diploma and then do an MA. As a start for the MA programmes you could check out these places in the UK : Leicester, Aston in Burmingham, Sheffield (can't remember which one in Sheffield) and Surrey.

Whoops, I forgot to mention that a degree was necessary, I just thought it was a given. .
