Does anyone know when Romania asks for notarised documents, can they be notarised by any lawyer, or do they have to be notarised by the embassy or consulate? Anyone know how much this costs? The consulate hasn't answered any of my emails.

I am not 100% sure about this, but I think when the embassy does it, it's been 'apostiled.' If true, that would mean that any legal notary could notarize the thing, so long as they're not asking to have it apostiled (appostile? unsure of spelling as well as accuracy of info!)

Apostille Smile
I had my birth certificate apostilled for work purposes - it was required by the Czech authorities a couple of years ago, but not anymore. I didn't have to go through the embassy, but I did go to a special law court to get the said apostille, and I had to wait around half a day.
I don't think lawyers can notarise documents - notaries do it. In Romania it's quite pricey, but are you asking about notarised documents IN Romania, or somewhere else?

I have some documents apostilled Very Happy by the Czech government as well, required for marraige Smile

I think notarization is probably less official, and much easier to have done, unless the instructions naturegirl's received are unclear about which is required.

Im also not sure, but I disagree with you, Spiral. Notarization at an embassy means notarization, nothing more.

However, Im going to the embassy tomorrow to get an affidavit that will have to be notarized. If I end up getting an apostille, Ill eat crow on here.
