Hello,
A friend and I are considering going to North Thai shortly. Maybe for 6 months or so.
Ideally we'd just like to work as freelance private tutors and tutor 1-on-1 / small groups.
Also, I'd like possibly work helping those prepare for IELTS as I have experience in this area. I might be interested in teaching in a classroom environemnt.
Any advice? all help is very much appreciaed. |

Re: teaching privates- who is going to hire you? You generally need to know people before you get privates. When you become known as a decent teacher, people will approach you for lessons.
Committing to only six months may also be a problem. But the second semester starts at the end of Oct./begining of Nov. so you might find a position for just the one semester. Language centers may be your best bet.
Do you really want to teach, or do you want to finance your vacation? |

Well, if not teaching - then what other means do I have off financing my vacation? |

Not just for his comments but for the "have off"
Freudian slip?

What do you do in your home country? You need to do that and save money. That's how you finance a vacation. If you have a teaching job you won't have much time to enjoy a vacation. My advice: re-think your plans. |

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
Another selfish *beep* who doesn't even realise what teaching is, just what the students of Thailand need. |

His "experience" consists of 2 months. His IELTS specialisation consists of doing some kind 1 A4 page assignment when he was doing his unrecognised TEFL cert. He dropped out of uni twice and is bored and fed up with the low pay and work after 2 months in China. |

Bangkok Hound - You said: Do you really want to teach, or do you want to finance your vacation?
I was simply asking you what other means I have of financing my stay in Thailand... do you mind answering that?
What do you do in your home country? You need to do that and save money.
I was a salesperson, who loathed sales. And I'm in China now... and have no desire to return to my home country, Australia - anytime soon.

DMPT... another grumpy person making incorrect assumptions about a younger person.
I teach almost everyday and my student generally enjoy my classes. What I am not enjoying is feeling unhappy in this part of China - so I turn to DAVESESL to gain some advice from some experienced teachers, but most of what I get is criticism.
And yes what you said Harry the Hobbit is right.
My point is I've come here to look at what options I have. I like teaching, just not in China. |

Imho, it isn't a crime to spend 6 months abroad teaching. Far greater crimes are commited on a daily basis.
Just be upfront with your employer about the length of your stay, bring some cash, be real and have fun.
After 6 months you might find that you like (or hate) Thailand; this is a good way to test the waters.
