I'm arriving in Taiwan on March 30th from Bangkok and will try to get a 30 day landing visa at the airport on arrival. Seems to be easy enough to get that visa. I did try to get the 60 day visa here in Bangkok but they told me that I needed a contract or some other paper indicating what I would be doing in taiwan, which I didn't have (despite the fact that I've already found a job, but not signed a contract with yet). So at any rate, it seems that I'll be doing at least one visa run to HK.
My questions are:
1. Does this 30 day stay, during which time I'll be doing my medical and so on, apply towards the 183 days after which my taxes will be reduced to a lower percentage?
2. During this 30 days, I'm not quite sure what I'll be doing with my time. For people who find jobs in Taiwan and begin processing their ARC, do you just sit around waiting or can the school still employ you while waiting? If the former, it will be a long time till payday..... |

1. the tax office calculates the number of days you have been in the country by looking at the entry and departure stamps in your passport. Even if you just enter the country for a few days on a visitors visa this counts towards the total number of days the tax office considers you have been in the country.
2. Technically it is illegal to work before you get your ARC, but it is a grey area of the law. Providing your employer has submitted the documents to begin processing your work permit you are unlikely to face any problems |
