I can't remember - is it OK to flush toilet paper down the loo in Chile, or not? I know it isn't in many Central and South American countries, but I'm not sure about here.

In a lot of older buildings it's not ok. If you live in an old building, expect the toilet to get clogged easily.

I lived there for a year but in a poor area in the South. I wasn't allowed and it had to go in a bin beside the toilet. Not pleasant for a woman, I can tell you.

I agree with Ai....not everywhere in Santiago is it OK to flush your toilet paper, and you definitely need to be careful not to use too much paper as the toilets here certainly don't flush as well as your one at home will.

Of course you can throw toilet paper into toilets here, unless you are living in a cabin in the middle of the woods, i guess, lol

Its not the case everywhere, but surely not unheard of. My houses (cabins?) in Vina and Valpo (the woods?) surely haven't been able to manage toilet paper at all.

Better to be on the safe side if there's a bin provided in the bathroom.

There are frequent signs to not flush the toilet paper down the toilet, and also they say that if there's a small trash can next to the toilet that that's a sign for you to put the toilet paper there, and not in the toilet.

That being said, I think most toilets can handle their fair share of toilet paper but it has somehow become a bit of a "custom" for people to not put the TP down the drain - better to be safe than sorry perhaps? Sorry but that's my best explanation Confused

If there is a garbage can in the stall or beside the toilet you can be sure you are expected to respect it and use it. The plumbing is different and especially rural areas have septic-like systems. No garbage can-flush it. That simple. I can think of a lot of countries in the world who think we are disgusting for putting paper in the toilet or even using paper at all (they use water or bathe right away). Most households in Chile remove the garbage from the bathroom daily.
