Here's an objective overview:
I found the students in Libya to be fine, motivated and really friendly. Parts of the country are really beautiful if you can get to them. There isn't much to do in Tripoli or the desert. Very much depends on who you are working with, (if you are working with anyone at all). There are many really shabby housing offers. In the desert you may well live in a trailer or converted shipping container. However, it's opening up and new training gigs are appearing all the time advertising modern, new facilities etc. The admin is awful so this may screw up your leave etc. The money needs to be really good for a desert posting as it's hardship they're paying you for.
Advice; take many books, have a keep fit programme and take any extras you rely on. Don't expect it to be like the Gulf with 5 star hotels and good facilities...it's a real shock at first. Tripoli is dull...you've got the Corinthia for a decent meal and gym and that's about it...but wow is it expensive. You can walk around the national museum in half an hour.
I don't know much unless it's about oil gigs in the Sahara. I do know there is a British council there and the horror outfit Berlitz also operates there along with Bell. Oil companies you could look up are; Veba, Zuetina, Repsol, Esso, Eni, Agip, Slumberger, Ras Lanuf and Sirte Oil Company................ and that's about it. Longer than 6 weeks in the desert is really hard.
I'll be there again next month. |
