Has anyone heard of teachers getting home stays in Peru? That is living with a family as the Spanish imersion students do. In Guatemala as a Spanish student I once tried to 'go it alone' and couldn't make it on twice the cost of the homestay plus I had to do my own shopping, laundry, cooking etc.

I did a homestay for the 1st two months when I was in Peru. The cost was actually more than when I went out on my own, but I used those 2 months to make contacts to acquire cheap housing and to learn where the good inexpensive eats were--so the experience had its value beyond the cost.

Ask your students &/or friends -- it seemed everybody had a cousin or aunt who ran or knew someone who rented rooms, some with food & laundry, some more like homestays. Just didn't seem to be advertised.

Hi. When I lived in cusco I stayed with a Peruvian family and paid rent but I found them through the newspaper that has all the adverts in it. It was really good. I had a private room and bathroom but I was always around the family so it was very good practice for my spanish and sometimes they invited us for dinner. I never ate with them or anything but we would hang out or talk with them so that's another way to go about it. GOod LUck and it was probably the best thing I ever did to get emerged into the culture.
