There's a new posting for the American U. of Iraq. Does anyone know what the salary is? As any veteran of this field knows, normally when the salary is conspicuously absent from a job posting it means exactly one thing: the salary sucks. But to get people to work in Iraq, I would think the salary would have to be pretty good. Does anyone know anything?

After Turkish army's incursion/offensive in the region against some terror-minded people, it proves to me that the place is very volatile to take the risk. You never know what happens next. If peshmerga and Turkish army decide to exchange some 'bullets', you can be a victim too.

Probably about as safe as Washington, DC, on a very late Saturday night. Avoid at all costs unless they supply armored vehicle and armed escorts, similar to those for U.S. officials in DC.

Suli is a nice city - the cultural capital of Kurdistan and the most liberal place in the region - couples drink together in coffee shops etc. Much nicer than where I am. There are some stunning mountains nearby and Lake Dokan is nice. The new campus will be impressive when it is finished - you should be able to save about USD 2400 a month in this position. Wouldn't be that bad - much better than Saudi or Kuwait.

Mr Rendition... on the net one can't see the tongue in the cheek. I would take care trying to use humor (??) if that is what it is on a topic like this. People need advice based on experience, not attempts at a joke. Especially with a screen name like yours.

Thus far no one seems to know the pay scale. Kasper... you may have to apply to find out.

My, gosh! I would have thought that those wishing to teach a language would be well aware of context. My post was clearly (not?) in the context of the previous post. Really, has DC become that dangerous???

I would tend to agree. The English translation of arabic words with "y" or "i" is indeed an area of much discussion.

"Hawally" or "Hawalli" is just one example in Kuwait.

These are some of the spellings on road signs on the way to 'Suli':-

Suleimani
Sulaymaniah
Suleimania
Sleimani
Sulaymaniyah
Sulimania

I don't think anyone has officially made their mind up about the correct spelling of 'Suli'. It's just a tranliteration of the Kurdish/Arabic script. Irbil, Erbil, Arbil, and in Kurdish to make it more confusing, Hawler, Hewler are all the same place aswell.

I do know that the airport signs say Sulaymaniyah and Erbil, but that doesn't prove anything because most of the signs have errors.

The students here are extremely flippant about spelling and often spell an English word several different ways in the same essay. This maybe a result of Kurdish spelling not being fully standardised/standardized. The great bard himself, Shakespeare, wasn't consistent with the spelling of his own name either.
