There's a new posting for the American U. of Iraq. Does anyone know what the salary is? As any veteran of this field knows, normally when the salary is conspicuously absent from a job posting it means exactly one thing: the salary sucks. But to get people to work in Iraq, I would think the salary would have to be pretty good. Does anyone know anything? |

Why do you ask people's opinion then? |

That is very obvious windstar... in his question, he asked about salary. Nowhere did he request any 'opinions' on safety.

I would tend to agree. The English translation of arabic words with "y" or "i" is indeed an area of much discussion.
"Hawally" or "Hawalli" is just one example in Kuwait. |
I lived in Hawalli (or Hawally) for 3 years and don't remember much discussion on its transliteration. However, I seem to remember some of the neighbourhoods having different ''English'' names and even inconsistencies on signposts.
Why do the Saudis insist on ''Makkah'' when we call it Mecca? |

I think it might be because MEKKAH or MECCA in Arabic M-K-H not M-S-A. |

The change from Mecca to Makkah happened during my time in Saudi Arabia, back in the 80s.
There was, as far as I know, no "official explanation" for the different spelling, but the most popular "guess", among both Saudi and ex-pats, was that the Kingdom wanted to "distance" the name of the holy city from some of the unsavory contexts that were/are in common use in English - e.g. Las Vegas is a mecca for gamblers. |

Have you found out the salary yet? I worked at an international school in Erbil (Sabis, horrible) and some of my collegues considered switching to AUI for its better salary. I know that the pay must be over 30k for 10 months. Good luck! Suley is a swell city. |

Ive applied there and passed the first round of review. from what I understand from friends who are going is that the other thread, "AU-Iraq," has some info that's closer to the mark then the speculation on this thread. so if you want to get passed the name calling that happens all too often on this site go check that one out. |

Dear joesunsangnim,
Did you get hired by AU Iraq? What do you think of the place?
Thanks,

Do a search here... and a google. Lots of bad press on this place because it seems to be the typical political cash cow for favored friends of the US administration.
