I will be visiting Vietnam in the next month to do some sightseeing and check out the work situation. I am interested in teaching in Vietnam and have a B.A. and a B.Ed and five years of experience teaching in Japan.

Given my experience and education what kind of position/wages should I be looking for?

Also, is the standard procedure regarding changing from a tourist to working visa in Vietnam the usual? - sponsor, visa run across the border, return and work?

Any advice regarding what places are better to live (North vs. South etc city A vs. city B) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I've only been here a couple months, so not an expert, but I think you would have no trouble getting a job with a B.Ed background. If your B.Ed is in the field of ESL or includes teacher certification, you'll especially not have any trouble and could probably get one of the better paying jobs anywhere between $14-18 an hour. When I first got here and checked out jobs, most places were offering $12, but the foreign owned places offer a scale according to your qualifications. The visa situation is a bit different and most schools seem to just hire you on a tourist visa that you keep renewing for 3 or more months.

I'm in Saigon and love it here. Hanoi's a bit smaller, quaint, and more conservative. Saigon isn't huge, but chaotic and full of energy. Depends on the atmosphere you're looking for I guess. Hope this helps!

Hello, I am currently teaching in China. I have enjoyed my life in China. However I would be interested in going to Vietnam. I only have a TESOL certificate and two years of University (plus 1 year teaching experience). Can you tell me what the usual qualifications are to teach in Vietnam.
Thanks, Betty

Is age a major factor in obtaining a teaching position? Is there a preference for certain nationalities? I have taught in Korea but would love to work in SE Asia.

Hello

I was in Saigon for July and August 2003 (volunteering in an Orphanage) and while I was there I was offered several teaching positions - all of which I declined. I do have 4 contacts in HCMC - all Schools or Australian teachers if anyone would like them.

I am now living and working at a Boarding School in China and love it - plan to stay here for at least two years.

Hello again

I forgot to mention the two main things - I am now 57 and previously had no experience in teaching. I have no Degree and no qualifications either.
