Hi

I work at a very small school and am putting together our social programme, unfortunately almost all of our students are from the same country, and they don't drink, so 'pub evenings' (hem hem) are out. I wondered if anyone had any original ideas, not just for the evening but for daytime activities too, something they hopefully won't find too boring (they are young adults) and will maybe give them the chance to meet and get to know other, non-Turkish people!

There are quite a number of booze-free activities available in London.

Depending on what your students like:

1. Many museums and galleries stay open late or put on evening events.
eg. Friday Late at the V and A open until 10pm (last Friday of each month)
British Museum, the Great Court, is open until 11pm, Thursdays to Saturdays.
Tate Modern is open until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Tate Britain is open until 10pm on first Friday of each month.
The National Gallery is open until 9pm every Wednesday.
The Chelsea Physic Garden is open in July until 10pm on Wednesdays.

2. Swimming
Tooting Bec Lido is open until 8pm everyday.
London Fields Lido (heated) is open until 8pm weekdays
Hampstead Heath Lido has late-night swimming until 8.30pm on Monday, Thursday and Friday.

3.Evening guided walks

Check out <www.walklondon.org.uk> for walking routes and suggestions (including Old Westminster by Gaslight and Jack the Ripper Haunts)

4. Indoor climbing walls

Even if the weather isn't great, you can still have fun at one of London's many indoor climbing centres - and get fit at the same time. Most are open late in the week.
Try Castle Climbing Centre, Green Lanes, N4 (Manor House Tube) open until 10pm
or Mile End Climbing Centre, Haverfield Rd, E3 (Mile End Tube)
open until 9.30pm
or Westway Climbing Wall, Westway Sports Centre, 1 Crowthorne Rd, W10 (Latimer Rd or White City Tube), open until 10pm.

I'm based at a London university and we were asked by these newspapers what we could suggest for free evening student activities - we told them, and they presumably published our ideas!!

Check out the Time Out London magazine for 12 June-18th June, as there is a good section " 100 great things to do in London for under �10". There may be some free activities you had not thought about.
