I've heard from a friend applying there that UofC wants teachers with a good academic research background.

A friend said he was refused being hired there b/c of little academic teaching background.

U of C Qatar has a job posting on tesol.org, but the links are not active and when pasted (oh the bother Mad ) are dead ("Firefox can't find the server at www.ucalgary-qatar.ca")

Really inspires confidence in a new start-up institution... Rolling Eyes

maybe they need someone with a good technological background Wink

Academic research background? huh? I just went to the UoC website and apparently it is a nursing school. Another bit of mystery as this means that they will likely never have a Qatari student. (nursing is considered a very low prestige job and not acceptable for women) It opened last year with about a dozen students and projects an intake of 100 a year?? How many expat families have a kid that wants to go into nursing?

But, even from this Canadian website, the links to the Qatar branch are all dead.

So, either their website has crashed or they have done an evaluation of the market and bailed out.

You are right VS. --- CNAQ runs the pre-nursing program so they are working with the U of C. I thought when the U of C arrived and started to set up a couple of years ago that they were in for a surprise -they were all so keen, excited etc. CNAQ found that very few Qataris are interested in their Health Sciences program - no Qatari wants to be a paramedic etc. And VS is right - no Qataris want to be nurses - it is seen as a job done by the "lower classes". The U of C Nursing program was doomed from the start. It is just another "show" by the Qataris - they can boast that the program exists, but they never mention that Qataris want no part of it. They will probably stay - as CNAQ has - because they are probably making money - same reason all expats are there. They don't care in the end who takes the program. Interesting fact at CNAQ - the school is mandated by the government to have 80% Qataris - most are in the Business program - so they can all be managers - Qatari enrollment is very low (zero in some) in IT, Engineering and Health Sciences (and Security).

Even UofC's process for accepting studens is somewhat confusing. When an Asian friend applied there to be a student, the admission counsellor told her that she couldn't because they were interested in Qataris. When I asked this same admissions counsellor about this via email, she said that admission was open to all.
