Sure, there are flats that go for less. It all depends on where you live, what that money includes, and how nice the overall structure is. Ask if there are WORKING a/c units, how much the doorman is paid each month, if there are working hot water heaters, good plumbing, furnished, etc. Here's the deal: landlords who rent units that will be occupied by foreigners want a lot more money than 800-1200 LE. Furnishings are often cheap and ugly. As the price drops, the value of ugly increases. Egyptian economics. Smile I would want to see the flat of a company that would pay a qualified teacher so little. Honestly...give this one a miss. You didn't make a mistake by telling them you were coming. Just don't accept the offer. Even Choueifat pays about 1600 USD/month and provides shared accommodation. It's a strict curriculum, but it's a reliable wage, and the management in Cairo are, overall, quite decent. Spend a school year there, and then move on.

Hey MM... what are the chances of just dropping in and getting a position with Sabis/Choueifat? How about Sakkara?

BTW amainegypt... being paid in dollars is a major perk. With SAbis, you could stay a year and afford to visit neighboring countries during holidays. Egyptian pounds are darn near impossible to change to dollars, so you have to spend every cent in the country. You can't even use it to pay for a plane ticket out of the country if you don't have the proper work visa.

Sakkara is always looking for late hires about this time, but they are one of those insitutions that has a history of putting teachers ont the never-ending tourist visa rather that getting the proper residency.

Choueifat has 2 schools, so it's quite likely that they'll need people-not unusual to get a surge in enrolment about this time. Contact them now and let them know you'll be "visiting". I'd also check American International School. Choueifat is ok for a year, but you really are well-qualified. Better jobs await you next academic year if you don't mind doing time elsewhere.
