Nothing to do with EFLing but can I ask the best way to get to Otopeni (sorry, - Henri Coanda) Airport from the area around Gar de Nord ?

Easy: take a taxi.

Not so easy: make sure to avoid the private taxis. These are the guys who will assail you when you step off the train, going 'Taxi sir, you need taxi?'

What you do is brush them aside (you may have to be a tad less than wholly polite to do so!!) and go outside. Walk 100m or so from the main entrance and you will see plenty of the metered taxis driving around, who are MUCH cheaper and offer a pretty decent service. The typical rate, which is marked on the side, is 1.4 - 1.8 RON. Certainly, 2 RON per Km is the absolute most you should pay. That means that the trip to the airport should cost no more than 50 RON. There is an actual company called Flytaxi which specialises in airport trips but you would have to get them by arrangement. Coming the other way, however, they are always around the arrivals terminal and are readily available.

When exactly are you travelling? Why not PM me and if I am in town and free on the day you're passing thru, I will pick you up in the Bebsi-mobile. Free of charge, compliments of Bebsi!! Smile

There is a bus I am told. An express bus.
Monsieur Bebsi is very kind but I want to use public transport. A shocking idea to some !

The bus is the 783. Go downstairs when you get to arrivals and as you exit the terminal you'll see a kiosk to your right. You have to buy a magnetic card good for two trips and last time I got one it was 5 RON.

Coming from town you can pick it up from (if memory serves) Unirea, Universitate, Romana, Victoria and Pta Presei Liber. I guess from Gara de Nord you could take a trolley bus to Pta Romana or the metro to Victoria and catch it from there. You'll need to look out for a kiosk to get the magnetic tickets.

Cheers,
Mike

In fact I am arriving by train and leaving by plane. My operatives assured me that there is an Express Bus from Gar de Nord to Otopeni. Airport If they are in error then another purge is due in the Scot47 Organisation. How tiresome !

*VERY OFFENDED BEBSI* Crying or Very sad

Well, Scot, there is an even cheaper alternative than public transport: with the cooler days of autumn now approaching, and Otopeni being a mere 17Km from the GdN, you could consider exercising shank's mare!! Great exercise, and the footpaths are now greatly improved...not only that, but the views are rather eclectic and give a wonderful insight into a city in fast-track transition to capitalism.

On a more 'serious' note, there was a story going around the Gulf for years - maybe even mentioned in the Saudi forum? - about an individual who consistently chose to walk from Heathrow into London in the interests of financial prudence and thrift.

One for the 500 Club, Scot? Laughing

BTW, the Bebsi offer would have been free...now surely that's cheaper and better than the bus??????

Public transport is the way. It works in Germany. Why not in underdeveloped countries like India, Romania and Great Britain ?

Bebsi is one of those who cannot contemplate mixing with the Great Unwashed and using a bus !

And my query was about getting TO Otopeni not FROM Otopeni. Ain't it amazing how poor the reading skills of some posters are ?

Thanks anyway.

Scot, it is precisely because the bus services in Romania are underdeveloped that Bebsi chooses not to use them and would have no hesitation doing so in Germany.

Mind you, taking the Bucharest bus service in Germany WOULD be rather difficult, I imagine!!!! Laughing

I use public transport in Bulgaria where I live. I would rather do that than zoom around in an SUV like those Daily Mail readers who have settled in Bulgaria. Pillocks !

I was hoping to learn how public transport (Metro , trams, buses) in Bucharest works, but will clearly have to look elsewhere for advice !

Hmm, if this was directed at me you'll notice I did explain how to get TO Otopeni - I just mentioned the return journey FROM Otopeni on the assumption that the post would be of equal use to people travel in the opposite direction. Call me public spirited if you will, but try reading posts more carefully before amazing yourself at other people's supposed weaknesses.

Anyway, the point of returning to this issue was to notify anyone it may concern that RATB have opened a new express route from Gara de Nord to Otopeni. Details are:

RATB 780 Bus (in Romanian)

Starting From: 17/01/09
Bus number: 780
Stops: Fluviului, Gara de Nord, Clabucet, Piata Presei Libere, Aeroportul Baneasa si Aeroportul International Henri Coanda (Otopeni).
Cost: 10 trips = 27 Lei (about 6 Euro)

Tickets and passes are available from RATB shops and kiosks.
