I am currently teaching in China. When my contract finishes in June, I am going to travel down SE Asia and fly out of Bangkok to San Francisco. Where should I get my plane ticket? On-line, I can find tickets for $530. Should I wait until I get to Bangkok to buy the ticket? The reason I ask this is because here in China, the closer you wait until the day you want to leave and if you buy from a travel agent, the cheaper the ticket is. It is pointless to book tickets online since they are so expensive. Is it the same in Thailand or is their travel industry more in line with the West?
Thanks for the information.

If you are aged under 26 then go to STA Travel where you can buy a flexible ticket on a reputable airline back to the US. If you're over 26 then check out the travel agencies on Khao San Rd or Soi Thong Lo, a one way ticket to the west coast will set you back about 13000 THB (about $350US) and will probably reroute in Taiwan or Japan. A return is double.
Hope this helps |

One more question:
Is it better to buy the ticket several months in advanced because it would be cheaper (as in the States) or wait until a month or less until I want to leave because it will be cheaper (as in China)?
Thanks

You can only buy tickets here in Thailand about 3 months in advance, and according to one travel agent the prices are subject to change every 15 days, making getting the cheapest flight possible a bit of a lottery! From my experience though, Bangkok is as cheap a place as anywhere to get a ticket, and there's usually availability even at very short notice. |
