I'm looking into a university teaching job in Arequipa that would require me to get a 12 month work permit.

Does anyone know if the visa allows for exit & re-entry into Peru during the 12 months as I also want to travel a little outside Peru? I saw reference on the message board to getting hold of a tax certificate (presumably before each exit) to allow me to leave the country?

As I understand it, If I come in as a tourist, I have to apply to DIGEMIN for the permit (hopefully Arequipa office will do this but if not a bus to Lima) and then get it sent abroad - say the Peruvian consulate in Arica -for pick up there & return to Arequipa. Is this the most efficient way?

Any suggestions appreciated.

You can't get your own work visa. You have to get a permission to sign a contract visa, sign the work contract, and then they do the stuff to get the work visa.

Once you get it, and it usually takes 3 months, I've heard it taking up to 9 though, yes, you can enter and leave no probs. BUT, you must have a SUNAT form number 1692 that your uni fills out and present it at the border. No form, no leaving.

Have fun on the Lima bus, takes about 14 to 16 hours Smile Good news is that you no longer have to leave the country to pick up the visa. But have to do all the paperwork in LIMA

Are you stuck on Arequipa? I konw a good place in Piura taht will get you a volunteer visa that's good for a year. See my PM for more info.
